Cappadocia Whirling Dervishes The ceremony of the whirling dervishes will take place in the winter time on 18.00 O’clock and in the summer time on 21:00 O’clock. All ceremonies will last for one hour and sherbet (very sweet drink) will be offered to guests. We as Turtle Tours will carry out your transfers from the hotel (Göreme, Ürgüp, Avanos, Ortahisar) and back.
The ceremony of the whirling dervishes is 100 Turkish Liras including the transfer and at least for 2 persons. Children under 10 years are not allowed to the ceremony. During the ceremony is prohibited to take pictures, you can take pictures after the ceremony.

Semâ is a part of the beliefs of the mother of Turkish history and formed as inspiration and developed by prophet Mevlana (1207-1273). It represents a spiritual journey towards and turning back from perfection (Mirâc).
In the houses of sema there are people who plays ney (kind of flute), kudüm (kind of drum), naathan (someone who read a kind of poem), ayinhan (dervishes) who create the music group ‘Mutrıp’. During the ceremony poems and songs will be singing with pieces from Mesnevi or Divan-ı Kebir from Mevlana. This music will be known also as Sufism. On the opposite of semahane there is a sheikh jacket. It will be believed that there is a invisible holy line between the jacket and the entrance called "Hatt-ı İstiva" which seperate the semahane in two half circles. The dervishes will across the other side whithout step on and turning his back to the invisible line. The red jacket is the most spiritual place and represent the birth and the existence with his color. The dervishes will take their place after they have greet the seikh jacket and the Semâ ceremony will start. Semâ consist about 7 parts. Every part has a different meaning. When we study on scientific manner we see that; The basic requirement of exist is to return.
The similarities between the existing of the smallest particles are the rotation of electrons and protons. Like as everything what turnedthe rotation of atoms which exist in human body, circulation of blood in human body, circulation of life cycle are return with an unconscious rotation. But what a human makes different and superior then the other entities is the mind. The whirling dervishes associates the sema with the mind.
- SEMÂ is return of human being from extinction to maturity. Returning of all assest, all those who created a new spirit, returning for love and service. When the dervish put out their cardigans shows the spiritual birth and the eternal road. The hat on his head (tombstone of the ego) and the Tennure which shrouded his ego. By crossing his arms in front of him it representing the number one. With this they certify the oneness of Allah. When they open their arms (Sema) the right hand earnestly pray to the heaven, the left hand is facing the ground. It is a symbolic figure that they received the beneficence from god and give it to the humankind. The dervishes are turning from right to left around the heart. İt means that they embrace all people, all creatures with love.


Cappadocia Saruhan A POINT ON A SILK ROAD A cervanserai standing in the middle of a desolate valley during centuries of civilization in Anatolia: SARIHAN KERVANSARAYI ( SARUHAN ). Saruhan has the immovable cultural and natural heritage status and has been bould in 1249 by Sultan II İzettenin Keykavus and is a work of 756 years from the Seljuk period. This monumental caravanserai is located on a location of 2000 sqm and consist of summer and winter sections. The entrance has a mosque, big courtyard, on the left a fountain. Arount the courtyard there are 6 rooms covered with barrel vault, covered winter division and a panoramic terrace.. Saruhan is locaten from 6 km from Avaons, 7 km from Urgup and located on the Kayseri main road (Ipek yolu – silk road)
Our company has leased the caravanserai for 49 years from the General Directorate of foundations. It is now managed as Special Facilities centre under the control of the ministry of culture in understanding and responsibility of Special place- Private service. Cervanserai
During the spreading of the İslamic religion ribat were established to protect the military purpose and border security in the history. There after has it been called Caravanserai and used for business purposes. After the Turks were Moslims and the location of the Islamic religion has expanded the Caravanserai had been developed in the period of the Seljuks. On the business roads in Anatolia hundreds of caravanserai were made. From far away it looks like a castle but when you came inside it were buildings with everything available for the needs of people. The Caravanserai were build on each 30-40 kilometers for the Seljuk sultans and high officials. Anatolia was like a bridge between the East Muslim and west Christian countries. The sultans of the Seljuk period like the Kılıç Arslan II, Gıyaseddin Keyhüsrev I, İzzeddin Keykavus I, Alaeddin Keykubad I, knew the importance of trade and build big caravansserai to the important trade centers which connected each other like the cities Antalya and Sinop because of the importance of the trade. They show a lot of convenience to the merchandisers.
Also the foreign merchants who came to Anatolia had a lot of convenience. Every kind of damage like damaging of goods during the transportation, suffering of robbery or goods which are sank in the sea they get help from the state treasury from the government insurance. They started from Antalya and Alanya (Alaiyye) to Isparta, Konya, Aksaray, Kayseri, Sivas, Erzincan and Erzurum and reached İran ve Türkistan. From Konya-Akşehir direction to İstanbul and west Anatolia vallys, from Konya, Ankara, Çankırı, Kastamonu, Durağan, Sinop and Sivas, Tokat, Amasya, Merzifon, Samsun to Sinop, South- North and Elbistan, Malatya, Diyarbakır to Irak. They made a lot of Caravanserai in this directions. The routes which were established during the Seljuk period were changed during the Otoman period. As a result of this some cities had losed to be commercial center. With the availability of the Cape of Good Hope the trade route which reach India has been shifted to the Atlantic Ocean. The routes became very deserted and the main routes became side roads after time. The Caravanserai located on this roads has lost their importance. When new roads were made, the Otoman continued with building new Caravanserais. The new Caravanserais were located on roads and connected cities lije İstanbul to Median through Syria for the people who go to fullfill pilgrimage. There were every kind of needs for the people like food court, places tos tay, barn, places to store goods, library, hammam, health court, shoemaker etc.
All this giant Caravanserais were foundations which made by sultans and statesmen. All kinds of types of traders and travelers rich or poor, whoever Muslim or non- Muslim they could come to the Caravanserai for all them needs for free.
When people were ill they could come here and will be treated for free even the animals. The treatment was payed by the foundation. When poor patient died, the funeral was payed from the income of foundation also. By the night the doors of Caravanserai were closed and candles were lit by the workers and nobody could get outside of the complex. New guest were welcomed but by the night no one could get out of the complex. In the morning when all of the people were awake the host will ask the guests if all there belongings are in good situation. When everyone has their belongings in good situation they went out of the Caravanserai.
The Caravanserai was used for commercial purposes during normal times. During the war it was used for avoid attack of the enemies and as a fortified place.
